Dean James Porter, College of Life Sciences, announces the appointment of Dr. Michael Whiting as the new director of the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum. The appointment is effective August 1, 2021.
Native Samoan graduate student studies genetic disease in her homelands
Family relationships are the fabric of the Polynesian culture. Grandparents help take care of the young, and in turn, children and grandchildren take care of the elderly. Having grown up in Samoa and Hawaii, graduate biology student Justina Tavana ('23) understands the value of looking out for aging community members, even as the ravaging effects of dementia steal away their close connections and identity.

A new BYU study, published in the journal Vaccines, shows that 68% of respondents are supportive of being vaccinated for COVID-19, but concerns remain about side effects, sufficient vaccine testing and vaccine effectiveness.

Researchers, led in part by BYU’s Byron Adams, are using the history of tiny little microscopic Antarctic animals to solidify exactly how ice sheet dynamics played out over time and how they impacted historical ecosystems.

Student Spotlight: Erica Conley
Erica is a junior majoring in Biology. She enjoys the variety of directions there are to go with a biology degree. She said, "Everyone can have their own path and choose to do something they really enjoy doing. I am choosing to do cosmetic science, where I make cosmetic products in a lab."
Student Spotlight: Eva Jasinski
Eva recently returned from a study abroad in Vietnam where she studied dragonflies and damelflies with Dr. Seth Bybee! She is majoring in biology and minoring in environmental science. Eva grew up in Seattle and will be a senior this fall. She plans to continue working in environmental research after graduation.
Student Spotlight: Badí Quinteros
Badí is a junior from Cuenca, Ecuador double majoring in bioinformatics and genetics, genomics, and biotechnology. He loves meeting new people and doing research within his major. He plans to go into genetic counseling or a PhD program when he graduates from BYU.
