Major Information
BYU research in Nature: Rare gene variants double Alzheimer's risk
BYU researchers — including one undergraduate student — are part of a team that has identified gene variations that double a person’s risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease later in life.
BYU prof part of large team that linked two new genes to Alzheimer’s disease
Brigham Young University biology professor John “Keoni” Kauwe is part of an international research team that reports the existence of two genes associated with Alzheimer’s disease in the new issue of Nature Genetics.
BYU researchers identify gene variation that protects against Alzheimer’s disease
BYU biologists have discovered a rare genetic variant that helps people who should get Alzheimer's remain healthy.
BYU prof part of Alzheimer’s Disease Consortium that identifies four new genes for Alzheimer’s Disease risk
A Brigham Young University scientist is part of a consortium that, in the largest study of its kind, identified four new genes linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Each gene individually adds to the risk of having this common form of dementia later in life. These new genes offer a portal into what causes Alzheimer’s disease and is a major advance in the field.

Alumni Spotlight: Raya Esplin
Raya recently graduated with a major in bioinformatics and a minor in computer science. She is from Provo, UT and loved the versatility of her major. Students can use it for pre-med, computer science, research prep, or going right into the industry. Raya shared, "you can really tailor the major to your career aspirations." She got a job working full time as a software engineer for a tech company in Provo called Smarty, but is planning on applying to grad schools in the fall for a PhD in evolutionary biology! Her favorite class at BYU was BIO 250 with Byron Adams. To quote her, "I've never felt more intellectually or spiritually enlightened in any other class."
