Major Information
Newly discovered (tiny) animal species now carries the name of a BYU professor
Meet the newest nematode to be discovered on Earth: Steinernema adamsi, named after BYU professor Byron Adams. It’s not cute or cuddly, but it’s part of a special group of nematodes considered beneficial to humans because it can infect and kill insect pests.
From Classroom to Culture: Zach Eliason’s Berlin Internship
Working with an international team at Zayt Bioscience in Berlin, Germany, Zach Eliason (BIO ’23) used yeast microbes to produce palm oil alternatives.
Evolution Education: The Power of a Role Model
Religion and evolution can be touchy subjects and we are often having to be careful about the assertions we make about the two. People may struggle to reconcile the two and this is the problem Kenny Harrington (Bio ‘24) tackled in his CURA research. Harrington took first place at the Fall 2023 College Undergraduate Research Awards (CURAs). His research explored how students increase their acceptance of the theory of evolution based on their scientific reasoning skills.
"God is Involved": Faith and Science Seminar 2023
The auditorium seats were filled with students eager to hear the words of Dr. Ryan Cordner, microbiology and molecular biology associate professor, and Dr. Tim Jenkins, cell biology and physiology associate professor. Recipients of the College of Life Sciences Spiritually Strengthening Award, both professors spoke on how their faith guided their career and life paths.

Meet Our Biologists
Alumni Spotlight: Raya Esplin
Raya recently graduated with a major in bioinformatics and a minor in computer science. She is from Provo, UT and loved the versatility of her major. Students can use it for pre-med, computer science, research prep, or going right into the industry. Raya shared, "you can really tailor the major to your career aspirations." She got a job working full time as a software engineer for a tech company in Provo called Smarty, but is planning on applying to grad schools in the fall for a PhD in evolutionary biology! Her favorite class at BYU was BIO 250 with Byron Adams. To quote her, "I've never felt more intellectually or spiritually enlightened in any other class."
