Phylogeny of the Scorpionflies (Mecoptera) of the World

Mecoptera is a relatively small insect order (~500 spp.) comprised of nine families whose phylogenetic relationships are under investigation.

Based on multiple molecular markers ( 18S rDNA, 28S rDNA, Elongation 1-alpha, Cytochrome Oxidase II) and a newly complied morphological matrix, we have established a robust phylogeny for this order. One of the most significant results is to establish that fleas (Siphonaptera) are a group subordinate within Mecoptera, as sister group to the Boreidae (snow fleas).

This research is being conducted in collaboration with George W. Byers (University of Kansas) and is supported by NSF grant # DEB-9615269.
