I still don't know how we wanted to do that, please advise.

Collecting Samples

Saliva

Before Sampling

  • Do not eat, drink, smoke or chew gum for 30 minutes before giving your saliva sample.
  • Do not remove the plastic from the funnel lid

Sampling Procedure (2-5 minutes)

  • Spit into the funnel until the amount of liquid saliva (not bubbles) reaches the fill line
  • Hold the tube upright with one hand. Close the funnel lid with the other hand by firmly pushing the lid until you hear a loud click. The liquid in the lid will be released into the tube to mix with the saliva. Make sure the lid is closed tightly.
  • Hold the tube upright. Unscrew the funnel from the tube
  • Use the small cap to close the tube tightly
  • Shake the capped tube for 5 seconds. Discard or recycle the funnel.

Blood

Venipuncture Protocol

  •  Check subject armband and have subject verbally identify themselves with their initials.
  •  Get blood draw supplies prepared: tourniquet, gloves, pre-labeled collection tubes, vacutainer holder, vacutainer needle, alcohol swab, cotton ball or gauze, band aid or tape.
  •  Subject should be in a comfortable sitting or supine position.
  •  Apply tourniquet. Select vein, insert needle into vein.
  •  Insert collection tube into vacutainer holder and collect blood sample. If more than one sample is to be collected, use correct order of draw.
  •  Once draw is completed, release tourniquet and withdraw needle while cotton/gauze is over venipuncture site. Once needle is completely out of subject’s arm, apply pressure to site with cotton ball or gauze.
  •  Discard needle into sharps container.
  •  Label blood collection tubes per protocol.
  •  Check injection site for excessive bleeding. If bleeding has stopped, a band aid or cotton ball/gauze with coban may be applied.
  •  Transport sample(s) to lab for processing.

Prior to shipping your samples, please print and completely fill out (in Excel or by hand) a sample intake form available here. Include this form with your package.

Stable at a wide range of temperatures (-4ºF to 122ºF) once it is mixed with the DNA stabilization buffer liquid. Samples can be mailed through any US Postal Service and no special packaging is required. We do recommend, however, that you ship all collected samples to the Kauwe Lab as soon as possible.

Blood Samples
Should be shipped overnight on dry ice. We recommend using a specialized overnight courier such as FedEx or UPS. We do not recommend using the United States Postal Service (USPS) for your shipment because of potential delays.
