Recruitment
The Payne lab in the Department of Biology at Brigham Young University (BYU) is primarily focused on research with undergraduate BYU students. If you are an undergrad and want to get involved in awesome science, please read my on-boarding document and email me (shp2@byu.edu) to set up a time to meet.
I am also happy to welcome graduate students into the lab. You would be admitted under the BYU Department of Biology, which offers both MS and PhD degrees. If you are interested, please email me to start the conversation.
Research Topics

About Provo and Utah
BYU is located in Provo, Utah, where opportunities for world-class skiing, snowboarding, fly-fishing, kayaking, hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, and many other outdoor recreational activities are less than 20 minutes from the lab. I personally live at the edge of a mountain about 1 block from a trail-head (and 13 minutes via bike to my office). Salt Lake City is a larger metropolitan area, and is only 45 minutes away by car or public transit (all students get free pass on public transit).
About BYU
BYU is a private institution run by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Students and employees do not have to be members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. All students and employees are required to uphold to a standard of personal conduct. For more information on this standard, please consult the honor code webpage (https://honorcode.byu.edu/).
