Rheumatic Relief

The mission of Rheumatic Relief is to relieve the burden of childhood rheumatic heart disease through:

Health Promotion and Education
Echocardiographic Screening & Follow-up
Genetics Research

The efforts continued by Rheumatic Relief began in 2009 and have flourished to become a viable clinical, educational, and research program with the potential of saving the lives of hundreds of children as well as influencing clinical protocol for rheumatic heart disease (RHD). To date we have served the children of Samoa.

Children in Samoa are much more likely than other children in the Pacific to get rheumatic heart disease, a potentially fatal disease which causes inflammation to the heart and its valves. Each year a group of BYU students and faculty travel there to screen children, educate them about symptoms and do research to help eliminate suffering from rheumatic heart disease.
