Preveterinary Medicine Emphasis

There is no college of veterinary medicine in Utah or at BYU.  However, BYU does have a preveterinary medicine emphasis in the College of Life Sciences in the Biology major.  If you decide to have another major in the College, you will need to complete the required courses for that major as well as the preveterinary medicine prerequisites that colleges of veterinary medicine in the USA require.

To receive a veterinary degree at most US colleges of veterinary medicine, you must either have a BA or BS degree completed, or be able to transfer classes from your first year of vet school back to your undergrad institution to fill necessary hours from higher division science courses to obtain your degree. Most will not confer a DVM degree without the veterinary student either having an undergrad degree completed already or having the above transfer of courses.  So, you must complete a major as well as general education courses required by the university in order for them to confer your baccalaureate degree if you get admitted to a college of vet med prior to graduation. The prereqs for most CVMs are listed with the BYU Biology major MAP
. You can be any major in the College and still do the prevet prereqs for vet school, but all GE courses as well as required courses for a major must be done before leaving BYU if you are expecting BYU to accept higher division CVM courses to confer your BS. As long as you declare a preveterinary medicine emphasis, Dr. Roeder, can advise you concerning admission to colleges of veterinary medicine and prerequisite course work. She is also able to answer any further questions.
