Mission Statement

The Biological Science Education focal area prepares exemplary biology teachers to serve in junior and senior high schools in the United States. In this focal area, the Department of Biology, College of Life Sciences, and College of Education faculty collaborate to provide pre-service teachers with rich content knowledge, pedagogical strategies and inquiry-based learning experiences to develop high quality future leaders in the field of Biological Science Education. This goal is accomplished by dedicated faculty who exemplify research based effective teaching practices, rigorous content courses, and practical teaching experiences prior to graduation. Our students are actively engaged in biological laboratory experiences, investigations, field trips, bioethical discussions, and technology activities appropriate for teacher preparation.

Currently the focal area research areas include:

  1. University and Public School Networks to engage junior and senior high school students in on-going research through such projects as UBEST, CUSEF, STEAMER, and the Field Science Academies
  2. Evolution Education and professional development for in-service teachers through activities such as graduate studies.
  3. Education Outreach and International Science Fair Projects through the BYU Microscopy Lab
  4. And the effects of teaching practices on student achievement through graduate thesis research and undergraduate mentoring projects
