MASTERS DEGREE

Admission and Entry:
Application deadline: January 31 (U.S. and international)

Entrance examinations:
GRE general test
Foreign students must submit TOEFL scores

Prerequisite: Baccalaureate degree in applicable field of study or equivalent

Typical Acceptance Criteria:
Minimum GPA of 3.0 in last 60 semester credit hours
GRE combined score of 1200 or above

Requirements for Degree:
Credit hours (30 minimum):
24 approved course work hours
Project (InBio 698R) or 6 thesis hours (InBio 699R)

Required courses:

  • Biol 503
  • No more than 9 hours of 300 or 400 level course credit can apply toward Master's degree
  • No more than 9 credit hours can be transferred from an accredited university
  • The residency requirement for M.S. students is two full-time, consecutive semesters (at least 6 credit hours per semester)
  • The minimum registration requirement is six credit hours per year. Students not meeting this requirement will be dropped from the graduate program.
  • Thesis or project:
    • Standard university thesis format or journal publication format
    • Project format must satisfy committee requirements

Examinations:
Oral examination on course work
Defense of research
Oral defense of thesis or project

PH. D.

Requirements for Degree:
Credit hours (54 minimum):
36 course work hours plus
18 hours of dissertation (InBio 799R)

Required courses:

  • Biol 503
  • No 100-400 level course credit can apply toward Doctorate degree
  • All coursework credit hours must be completed at BYU or at some other accredited Ph.D.-granting University. A maximum of 9 hours can be transferred from another Ph.D.-granting University. Credit from institutions other than BYU must be approved by the Advisory Committee, the Graduate Coordinator, and the Graduate School.
  • The residency requirement for Ph.D. students is two full-time, consecutive semesters (at least 6 credit hours per semester)

  • One semester of teaching experience in the department is required for all Ph.D. students
