Communication

BlockPlease find a flyer in the packet on Deer Springs Ranch which gives an emergency phone number for family members to reach you should anything happen while you are out of normal phone reach.

Please realize that we will be out of phone reach from Friday, June 3 until the first week of the course is completed. However, if you should need to reach either of us at the last minute please call the Biology Secretary at BYU at 801.422.7389. We will be picking up phone messages from her on the morning of June 6. Also, you may be able to reach Dr. Hanegan periodically on her cell phone; please ask for the number.

Accommodations

BlockOkay, on to more fun information. The facilities at Deer Springs Ranch are comfortable. There are 5 cabins which house five to six people each. The cabins do not have any electricity or linens. They do have beds for sleeping, but you need to bring your pillow and a sleeping bag is preferable. It can get very cool in the cabins at night in early June. Bring a flashlight for night-time light. Warm water showers and restroom facilities are located in each cabin which use well water and septic tank systems. So, the property management does not allow anything except minimal toilet paper down-line, as anything else can become a real back up problem for the septic system with so many participants. Ladies, all products must be disposed of in the trash cans in the restroom facilities. Once again, you will need to bring your own linens for showering. And shower time is limited to two minutes of water flow. So, rinse, turn off water, lather, and rinse again is the typical routine. Sorry, all these small rules keep us from having water and sewer problems at this remote site. Deer Springs is not charging us full price for housing because we are teachers; I think it is only reasonable that we abide by these simple rules. All participants are responsible for maintaining clean restrooms and this is one of the clean-up duties on the check out list.

Drinking alcohol is strictly forbidden. Also, do not bring camping gear. The site is not that primitive.

Food

BlockEveryone's favorite topic. UBEST will be providing you with food for the week, as it is a 40-minute drive to locate restaurant food. UBEST does not support the survival theory of killing food on the property. We will be eating well. Riley is fonder of eating bugs than Nikki, just joking folks! See the menu below.

We typically enjoy light self-made breakfasts, a collective gathering at lunch with self-prepared sandwiches, and a family-type evening meal with hearty foods. We don't heat up the stove for breakfast or lunch. Neither of us are vegetarian, so let us know immediately if you are so we can make necessary arrangements. If you have any special dietary concerns, please get back to us as quickly as possible. We cannot say we will be able to fulfill these. But, it is nice to be aware. Nikki has numerous food allergies and brings along only a few items of her own to avoid health problems. Although the kitchen is large, we cannot store separate food for 20 people. We have taken very persnickety eaters with us in the past and they were able to find a variety of foods to eat from what Riley and I bring along. And we are both excellent cooks, no kidding! However, we do ask for your assistance with cleaning tasks and food preparation. So, please pitch in or we won't be shy to ask for your help. The kitchen will also be used for our meeting and course preparation room, so it must stay clean after meals are over. The kitchen has warm running water, a large stove, refrigerators, large cabinets for food preparation, and a very large family table, which will seat everybody. Included here is a time-line which designates times for meals and you will notice there are session breaks before meals. This is for food prep time. But, not everybody needs to help with preparation everyday, at all meals. We will work out some kind of schedule at orientation. NOTE: EAT BREAKFAST BEFORE YOU ARRIVE ON MONDAY!
