From Classroom to Culture: Zach Eliason’s Berlin Internship

Working with an international team at Zayt Bioscience in Berlin, Germany, Zach Eliason (BIO ’23) used yeast microbes to produce palm oil alternatives. The focus of his research was to help mitigate the harmful environmental effects of oil palm tree farming in Indonesia and Malaysia. As a recipient of the Life Sciences Student Internship Grant, Eliason was able to make valuable contributions to the team and engage with a global science community.

Religion and evolution can be touchy subjects and we are often having to be careful about the assertions we make about the two. People may struggle to reconcile the two and this is the problem Kenny Harrington (Bio ‘24) tackled in his CURA research. Harrington took first place at the Fall 2023 College Undergraduate Research Awards (CURAs). His research explored how students increase their acceptance of the theory of evolution based on their scientific reasoning skills.

Faculty Spotlight: Liz Bailey

Dr. Liz Bailey is integral in our department! She got her undergraduate and graduate degrees from BYU and joined our department a few years ago. Dr. Bailey's favorite part of her job is working with students, particularly the one-on-one time she can spend with her research assistants as they "grow and become scientists." Dr. Bailey's research is focused on biology education with an emphasis on women in STEM, incorporating Traditional Ecological Knowledge in biology courses, reciprocal peer tutoring, and teaching equation derivation for students with math anxiety.

Alumni Spotlight: Peter Searle

Peter recently graduated in August 2022 with a masters in Biology. He plans to become a professor and is starting a PhD programs at Cornell in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Peter told us that he wants to help students "develop a fascination for the world around them."
